The Regime and Economic Crisis in Turkey Is Deepening

Turkey is currently facing not only an economic crisis but also a profound crisis of confidence in its institutions and political system. Recent developments have further weakened public trust, increased economic uncertainty, and deepened social polarization.

The controversy known as the "Absolute Nullity Crisis" has become one of the latest examples of this instability. While experts debate the exact figures, many observers argue that billions of dollars in foreign exchange reserves have been spent attempting to stabilize financial markets and protect the Turkish lira. The result has been increasing pressure on the economy, declining investor confidence, and growing concerns about the country's future.

The Turkish stock market has struggled to achieve sustainable recovery. Political tensions, economic uncertainty, and recurring domestic crises have discouraged both local and foreign investors. Without trust, long-term investment becomes difficult, and economic growth slows.

At the same time, high interest rates have created a situation that many citizens view as deeply unfair. Individuals with significant savings can earn substantial monthly income simply by keeping their money in bank deposits. For example, a person holding one million Turkish lira may receive tens of thousands of lira in monthly interest income without producing goods, creating jobs, or taking entrepreneurial risks.

Meanwhile, ordinary citizens who need consumer loans, housing loans, or business financing often face extremely high borrowing costs. This creates a system in which wealth tends to generate more wealth, while those struggling financially become increasingly burdened by debt.

Such economic conditions are difficult to sustain indefinitely. Throughout history, severe inequalities combined with declining living standards have often contributed to social unrest and political instability. Yet Turkey has a unique political culture in which the state is frequently viewed as a paternal authority rather than as an institution accountable to its citizens. This perception has traditionally limited the emergence of strong protest movements, even during periods of severe economic hardship.

As a result, many structural problems continue unresolved. Concerns about corruption, lack of meritocracy, bureaucratic inefficiency, and restrictions on free expression remain subjects of public debate. Whether one agrees with these criticisms or not, it is clear that confidence in institutions has been weakening for many years.

For these reasons, I have increasingly considered the possibility of building a new life in a country where democratic values, human rights, freedom of expression, and the rule of law are strongly protected. I am not interested in relocating to regions that face similar structural and social challenges. Instead, I seek societies where institutions function effectively and where citizens enjoy greater legal protections and personal freedoms.
